SWKhartoum Team Feedback

This was my first experience as a Startup Weekend mentor and I had a lot of fun. I was testing my own assumptions and validated ideas as I was mentoring because I would like to develop my own startup to serve the startup space. I am going to write about and critique every group, giving you feedback and suggestions. I will be brutally honest because I believe honesty is the best policy. Feedback will help you improve and we should always be seeking ways to improve and get better! Please understand though, my comprehension of the Arabic language is poor, my judgement of some your groups may only be based on my observations of […] more

How to validate your startup idea at SWKhartoum

The best idea won’t win Startup Weekend so forget about your idea. Instead, focus on the problem that your idea is trying to solve. Focus on validating your idea with actual customers. Fall in love with the problem, not your idea! Brilliant startup ideas solve a pre-existing problem so don’t even think about putting an MVP together until you’ve defined exactly what the problem is that you’re trying to solve. Then go find your potential customers and test your assumptions. Is solving the problem going to create enough value that somebody will pay you money for it? There’s only one way to figure out whether or not customers will love what […] more

Group dynamics – what to expect at Startup Weekend Khartoum

Tim at the Taj

It takes more than just a brilliant idea to win Startup Weekend. You need teamwork. Your startup contingent will need to function as a cohesive unit for 54 hours; collectively executing on a brilliant (and validated) idea and by times up, have a demonstrable prototype to be appraised by your judges. You won’t have time for messing around. Leaders will need to lead. Autonomous toil will need to collaborate. There will be pressure. There will be stress. There will be a dichotomy of adulation and triumph as well as moments of dejection and listlessness as you progress over the weekend. Your startups discourse, its ability to overcome challenges, is part of […] more

How I became a Startup Weekend mentor

#SWKhartoum

That tech startup failure festival Startup Weekend is coming to Khartoum for the very first time (Nov 14-16) and I’ve been asked to mentor. How am I even qualified for such an esteemed job? For the uninitiated, Startup Weekend (SW) is where a bunch of wannapreneurs pitch a tech startup idea on a Thursday evening. They’re hoping to inspire a cohort of developers, designers and hustlers to champion their glorious idea into a working prototype by Saturday night. They’ll then demo that prototype to a panel of experts, who are judging – looking for the next big thing in tech  – providing feedback, and declaring winners for the weekend of the best startup idea. This is […] more
