How to validate your startup idea at SWKhartoum

The best idea won’t win Startup Weekend so forget about your idea. Instead, focus on the problem that your idea is trying to solve. Focus on validating your idea with actual customers. Fall in love with the problem, not your idea! Brilliant startup ideas solve a pre-existing problem so don’t even think about putting an MVP together until you’ve defined exactly what the problem is that you’re trying to solve. Then go find your potential customers and test your assumptions. Is solving the problem going to create enough value that somebody will pay you money for it? There’s only one way to figure out whether or not customers will love what […] more

Group dynamics – what to expect at Startup Weekend Khartoum

Tim at the Taj

It takes more than just a brilliant idea to win Startup Weekend. You need teamwork. Your startup contingent will need to function as a cohesive unit for 54 hours; collectively executing on a brilliant (and validated) idea and by times up, have a demonstrable prototype to be appraised by your judges. You won’t have time for messing around. Leaders will need to lead. Autonomous toil will need to collaborate. There will be pressure. There will be stress. There will be a dichotomy of adulation and triumph as well as moments of dejection and listlessness as you progress over the weekend. Your startups discourse, its ability to overcome challenges, is part of […] more

How to pitch your idea at Startup Weekend Khartoum

Startup Weekend Khartoum

On Thursday evening you’ll be given just 1 minute to pitch your idea at the inaugural Startup Weekend Khartoum. How to even? Because overwhelming excitement, it’s totally plausible that all 100 participants could be pitching their startup idea. How will you stand out and get your idea endorsed by the crowd? How will you attract co-founders and form a capable, cohesive and victorious startup team? #SWKhartoum will be limited to 20 startups only. That means only 20 ideas will make it through the 1 minute pitch playoff. The rest will be culled. If your pitch isn’t successful, you’ll have to sideline your idea for now and go join another startup and help work on […] more

52 and 17: The Productivity Hack Your Boss Will Hate

Casino

I once had an associate who worked as a croupier at a casino. I thought it was an enviable job because of the generous working conditions. You’re basically getting paid to gamble, you get free meals, your uniform is taken care of and you get a 15 minute break for every hour worked. Despite the benefits, working at casinos can be incredibly depressing. It’s an environment full of losers losing. It’s no wonder this associate of mine had a drug problem. Anyway, there was one thing this casino was getting about right. The frequent breaks. A recent study by time tracking software spruikers Desk Time found that the most productive people take a 17 […] more

Easy Money

997 Fajbusiewicz Na Tropie. It’s an infamous Polish TV crime series shot in Łódź. I recently took part in the making of an episode. I played a bit part as a crime scene investigator taking photos of a murder victim. My girlfriend works part time for the show looking after casting and location scouting. I was with her one day driving around the Polish countryside while she was location hunting for a suitable house to use for filming. One does not simply film a house to put on a TV show. You need to get permission from the owner. This requires negotiation. After cold calling on the 4th house she was getting frustrated by all these home owners […] more

Tim Gardner Backpack

Have you ever wanted to take an extended trip overseas? It’s not an easy thing to do. It takes time and money. You need to take time away from whatever kind of life you’ve burdened yourself with and you need to scrape enough funds together to first buy that departure ticket. Now, I can’t help you escape from the drudgery you’ve trapped your life in (maybe) and I can’t help you with funding (yet) but I can give you a hot tip. I can tell you exactly what I’ve done to fund 3 years of travel. It involved hard work (I’ve worked in over 60 jobs, at times holding down 4 jobs at […] more

5 Reasons You Don’t Blog About That

tim_gardner

I’ve had this site www.timgardner.info for almost 4 years. Its had numerous iterations, mostly aesthetical or functional tweaks (perfectionism is a ridiculous boondoggler). Its had themes, plugins and widgets thrown at it. Its been 404 idol, broken for extended periods because fix >.< ??? (thanks for the awesome support BlueHost 🙂 I’ve even spent time hacking away at some of the code with amateuristic enthusiasm. But the one thing that’s always been wrong with this website is that it has always lacked content. Sure I’ve written some things and posted them, back in the day. But I deleted that because…? So now 5 compelling reasons why I left this site mostly a dormant blank canvas for the […] more
